Cairns FC prevail in all-time FFA Cup classic

A nine-man Cairns FC pulled off an incredible comeback against the Southside Comets in one of the greatest FFA Cup clashes in the competition's short history on Wednesday.

Trailing 2-0 in second-half injury time, Cairns FC scored twice in quick succession to send the game into extra-time, before prevailing 4-3 after 120 minutes of enthralling Cup action.

Despite coming up against National Premier Leagues opposition, Southside Comets were putting up an almighty fight against fellow North Queensland side Cairns FC.

They took a surprise lead inside the first 10 minutes of the clash, with Will Monin putting David 1-0 up against Goliath.

They held on to their advantage heading into the break, and even managed to double their lead early in the second half through Hiroto Higuchi.

It got better for the Comets, with Cairns FC reduced to nine men. A huge Cupset was on the cards.

But they let their guard down, and Cairns managed to pull one back in the 90th minute thanks to Jamie Carroll. Seconds later, it was 2-2. Carroll scored again through a free-kick with literally the last kick of regulation time.

Cairns FC had pulled off an almighty escape, and then managed to add a third and a fourth in extra time, both scored by Joshua Taylor.

The Comets did pull one back through Higuchi again to set up a nervy finish, but in the end the nine men of Cairns FC held on for an incredible victory.
