Any Big Blue, in any competition, is a massive game with both pride and very real stakes on the line – but remarkably, meetings in the Cup have been incredibly rare. In fact, the last time they met in a Cup was in 2007, when Sydney defeated Victory 1-0.
Sydney FC lifted the Hahn Australia Cup trophy in 2017 and 2023. Three years ago, they travelled to Melbourne to defeated City in the semi-final on their path to success; this time, Melbourne Victory will come to them.
The Sky Blues have fielded a relatively young squad on their road to the final. Tiago Quintal has been key, scoring four goals so far – including a hattrick against Bayswater in the Round of 32 – as has 20-year-old goalkeeper Gus Hoefsloot, who made seven saves against SD Raiders in the quarter-final.
The match could also see a club debut for James Overy. The 18-year-old defender is rated extremely highly in the Australian ecosystem and has been named by Tony Popovic in Socceroos squads.
Melbourne Victory reached the Final two years ago after winning the competition in 2015 and 2021 and will be hoping to participate in the Final for the fourth time in their history with a win on Wednesday.
Victory required extra time to defeat NPL NSW side APIA Leichhardt 1-0 in the quarter-final. Harry Sawyer was the hero, with the heavily involved Keegan Jelacic finding him inside the penalty area. Sawyer scored in both the Round of 16 and the quarter-final, the big forward setting himself to be a player to watch in the semi-final.
It is a fascinating and unpredictable clash as both sides seek to go one step closer to their first trophy of the season.
