On Matchday 3 of the 2025 Hahn Australia Cup Round of 16, Heidelberg United emphatically earned their third Cupset by putting three past Western Sydney Wanderers.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Queensland's only remaining representatives, Brisbane City, prevailed over Olympic Kingsway in an enthralling penalty shootout.

Heidelberg United FC 3 - 0 Western Sydney Wanderers FC

United capitalised on a calamity 12 minutes in from their A-League opponents and got off to a fantastic start. Bul Juach latched on to Wanderers defender Anthony Pantazopoulos’ under-hit back pass, rounding Lawrence Thomas and hitting the post before Alex Bonetig deflected the ball into his own goal.

The hosts continued to apply pressure and were presented with an opportunity from the penalty spot to double their lead. Juach took the responsibility and slotted the ball into the left of the goal, despite Thomas’ touch, sending Heidelberg strutting into the sheds with a Cupset firmly in view.

Western Sydney started the second half positively as Pantazopoulos rattled the bar with an early free-kick.

The Wanderers held onto the ball better after half-time, probing patiently for an opening.

However, Juach could have grabbed his hat-trick in the 78th minute, prodding the ball over from close in following a corner.

Heidelberg soaked up Western Sydney’s pressure and added a third in stoppage time on another historic night for the side in the Cup. Anthony Lesiotis raced down the left and shifted the ball inside before finding the bottom right corner, finishing off a spectacular result.

Heidelberg drew level with APIA Leichhardt in the history books, with both sides now boasting a record three Cupsets.

Brisbane City FC 1 - 1 (4-3) Olympic Kingsway SC

The game had a cagey opening with both sides eager to avoid conceding an early goal. It burst into life around 20 minutes in with Joseph Hobson’s point-blank shot for Kingsway expertly batted away by City goalkeeper Joshua Langdon.

The goalkeepers continued to stand out in the 40th minute when Sinagra produced a magnificent double save from close quarters for the visitors. Kingsway desperately repelled this late first-half barrage from City to go into the sheds with the deadlock still to be broken in Brisbane.

Olympic made the breakthrough just before the hour mark when Laat Mathiang picked out William Richards on the left of the box, who lashed the ball into the top right corner.

It took only a few minutes for the home side to restore parity. Corey Brown whipped in a left-sided cross for Ethan Docherty to crash in and bury a header at the far post.

The sides could not find a winner in what remained of regular time, needing extra-time.

City started the extra period with great purpose, keeping their opponents pushed back in their defensive half, with the left side providing a promising outlet. However, the teams once again could not be separated, leaving a penalty shootout to decide a spot in the next round of the Cup.

Brisbane City goalkeeper Langdon shone in the shootout, producing two saves, including the match-deciding fifth penalty for Kingsway from Harley Orr as the hosts made their way into the quarter-finals.
