The story of the 2014 Westfield FFA Cup Final

Adelaide United are into their second Westfield FFA Cup Final in four years and could become the first side to claim the domestic competition for a second time.

The Reds won the inaugural FFA Cup title in 2014 when they defeated Perth Glory 1-0 in front of a packed-out Coopers Stadium.

In a tense decider, both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances in the opening half as the match remained scoreless at the break.

The match took a turn on the hour mark when Glory defender Josh Risdon was shown a second yellow card for a careless challenge on Reds midfielder Marcelo Carrusca.

The Caltex Socceroos defender was booked just before the break and his moment of madness in the second half left his side with 10 men for more than 30 minutes.

And it took less than 10 minutes for Adelaide to take advantage.

Spanish winger Segio Cirio provided the breakthrough with a moment of brilliance inside the Glory box.

Cirio, who had scored in each of the Reds’ FFA Cup games leading into the Final, pounced on a neat ball from Marcelo Carrusca before dancing past Glory keeper Danny Vukovic and slotting into the bottom corner.

The strike was Cirio’s sixth of the FFA Cup campaign.

Despite their disadvantage, Glory re-grouped and pushed hard for an equaliser in the final 20 minutes to set up a nervy finale.

But Adelaide held firm and claimed a deserved victory, their first piece of silverware since winning the Premiers’ Plate in the Hyundai A-League’s inaugural season in 2005/06.

Goal-scorer Sergio Cirio was named the Mark Viduka Medallist as the player of the Final.
