APIA Leichhardt FC 2-0 Melbourne City FC

The game got off to a quick tempo in the pouring rain with City’s young side willing to be brave with the ball, while APIA pressed persistently.

The hosts made the breakthrough 27 minutes in with a well-worked move. Jack Stewart picked up the ball on the right and clipped a cross towards Seiya Kambayashi at the far post, whose gorgeous chip nestled in the far corner.

Stewart nearly added a goal to his impressive performance in the 38th minute when he curled a powerful shot from the edge of the box that came back off the bar.

APIA continued to create chances in the second half, and Stewart would then add a second 79 minutes in. The winger drove a low shot into the left of the goal and secured the NPL NSW’s title chasers a well-earned place in the next round.

Brisbane City FC 2-0 Olympic FC

Brisbane City claimed victory over rivals Olympic FC to advance through to the Round of 16.

Olympic had a promising first half-hour in the derby, rattling the crossbar twice as they pursued the opening goal.

Despite a series of chances for the visitors throughout the first half, they went into the break level with City.

With seven minutes to play, the home side grabbed a surprise lead on the balance of play. A determined Malakai Love-Semira played the ball across the box for Kye Bolton to tap home from close in.

City sealed their Round of 16 place deep into stoppage time when Marcus Barnes rolled the ball into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box.

Canberra Croatia FC 0-4 MetroStars SC

MetroStars found the opening goal in the 31st minute, finding just reward for a positive spell in the match. Tom Visser’s quick feet on the right allowed the winger into the box, where he picked out Jackson Fortunatow, who scuffed the ball into the goal.

In early first-half stoppage time, the visitors doubled their lead. Hamish Gow nodded the ball home in the aftermath of a right-sided corner.

The side carried on this momentum into the second half and added a third goal three minutes after the break. Owen Windsor reacted fastest to Gow’s saved long-range shot, slotting the ball past Sam Brown.

The hosts’ task became harder when forward Thomas James received his marching orders in the 57th minute, leaving Canberra with 10 players for the remainder of the match.

MetroStars scored their fourth and final goal when Visser sent a first-time finish under Brown from the right of the box, to cap off a highly convincing display on the road.

Newcastle Jets FC 2-1 Adelaide United FC

Newcastle Jets earned a come-from-behind win over Adelaide United in a wet encounter.

The Jets made a bright start to the match; however, against the run of play, United snatched the lead 15 minutes in. Jonny Yull set off on a sensational, mazing run down the right and found Stefan Mauk in the box, who steered a first-time effort past former Adelaide goalkeeper James Delianov.

Just after the half-hour mark, the Jets equalised through striker Ben Gibson. The striker shifted the ball inside and drove an accurate left-footed effort into the bottom left corner from the edge of the area.

The Jets took the lead soon after half-time as Alex Badolato made room for a shot in the box and drilled the ball low past United shotstopper Max Vartuli.

In a battling second half, there were no further goals as the Jets continued their run in the Cup.
